Anchusa officinalis is one of the most beautiful blue colored flower, with the deepest sapphire blue shade I ever saw in nature. It almost seemed surreal. Flowers are tiny, symmetrical, and they retain their color a long time.

Even though its flowers are blue its roots contain anchusin, also called alkanet-red, a brownish red resinoid colouring matter, soluble in alcohol, ether and chloroform.

The plant provides a significant amount of nectar for pollinators. 🐝
