Once Upon a Time

Once upon a time… Can I begin my story like this? I consider that at least the beginning should be classic, if the story isn’t. Because this one will be pretty different, you’ll see.

To be honest I don’t know how I ended up like this. I mean I started with normal dreams, like finding prince Charming with who I can live happily ever after in a castle. I dreamed of a huge garden surrounding my castle filled with exotic plants and colorful flowers. I dreamed of ballrooms, beautiful dresses, fancy dinners …

But back to reality, because life is not a fairy tale they say, and neither is mine. I’ve found my prince, but he came without a castle. Or a house. Or a cabin… not even a closet. In fact, he came without a horse too. But he did have a VW Golf II. (God, I loved that car!) But it was white, tho. So I made a compromise. And another. And so many others since then. I’m sure he also made some compromises himself. But hey, we’ve been together for almost 10 years now, happily married, living in a nice apartment with no garden, but lots of indoor plants and house pets.

Yes, I said lots and I mean it. Let’s say we managed to built our very own private jungle & zoo in all these years. At least this is how we like to call this madhouse. We have 50 m2, 42 plants, 2 cats, 2 dogs, and 1 cage free pet rabbit. 🐕🦙🐈🐈🐇 Crazy, isn’t it?

And that’s not all. Because we usually have a few extra pets, besides our own. We call them fosters. They come and go. They’re not our pets. They don’t really belong to anyone. They are unwanted animals we share our home and life with for a short period. Sometimes for a few weeks, other times for months or even years. Until they get adopted and find their own families.

So no, my life is anything but a fairy tale, but I still wouldn’t give it up for a “normal” life. Not for the one I imagined as a child. It’s not easy, but saving an animal’s life is something worth doing, or at least trying. Even if this means that you’ll have to dress up to match your dog and you’ll always be covered in fur. Remember: No outfit is complete without a dog. Or cat hair.
